How Often Should You Wash Your Towels (Plus Washing Tips)

When it comes to washing towels, it’s probably not something you think about every day. Pretty understandable!

And yet, you likely use your towels every day. You grab them after a hot shower, toss them over a hook, and barely give them a second thought until they start, well, smelling funky.

But how often should you wash your towels? Is it every day? Every month (ew, please don’t)? Somewhere in between?

Experts recommend washing your bath towels every three to four uses to keep them clean and prevent bacteria buildup.

Laundry can often take a backseat when life gets busy. But, while it might seem tempting to wait longer, regular washing with appropriate settings is so important.

Stick around as we unravel the mysteries of towel hygiene, from the ideal washing schedule to drying tips even your grandma would approve of.

How Often Should You Wash Your Towels?

The general rule is to wash your bath towels every 3 to 4 uses, as per the Cleaning Institute. That’s right – if you’re using a clean, dry towel and storing it properly, you can get away with not washing it every single time (phew, fewer loads of laundry to tackle).

Why this frequency? While your towel might feel clean, it absorbs water, dead skin cells, and possibly bacteria every time you use it. Damp towels left in a warm bathroom become the perfect breeding ground for germs to multiply.

Kitchen towels? Whole different story. Those guys endure it all—spills, grease, your hands after chopping onions. Wash those after a day or two of use or as soon as they get dirty.

Hand towels on the other hand (excuse the pun) should be washed at least once a week. However, if someone in your house is ill or have skin conditions, you’ll need to wash them every day or two.

What Factors Affect How Often You Should Wash Towels?

While every 3-4 uses is a great rule of thumb, in some cases, you’ll need to adjust.

1. Humidity Levels

If you’re lucky enough to live in a dry climate, your towels dry faster, meaning they stay fresh longer. On the flip side, if you’re in a humid or tropical area (or blasting hot showers that turn your bathroom into a rainforest) your towels might need washing more frequently.

2. How You Use Towels

Are you just dabbing your clean body dry post-shower, or are you using your towel to mop up spilled coffee or as an impromptu yoga mat? Higher contact with dirt or sweat means your towel should hit the washer more often.

3. Family Size

Sharing towels? (Please don’t, but life happens.) Larger households mean more family members touching the same towel, transferring oils, sweat, and germs, which is not ideal. Aim to wash shared towels every 1-2 uses.

4. Your Personal Habits

Gym towels should be ran through your laundry immediately after every sweaty workout – no exceptions. And if you’re one of those people who keeps their dirty towels bunched up in a heap on the floor, they’re crying out for a wash.

How to Wash Your Towels Like a Pro

It’s now time to grab your laundry basket and get these towels washed. But are you washing it the right way? Here’s my foolproof guide to squeaky-clean towels:

Separate Colors and Fabrics

Wash towels in their own load. Throwing towels in with clothes can cause lint transfer (hello, fuzzy black T-shirts) and wear-and-tear. I like to chuck my bath mats in with my towels too.

Choose the Right Temperature

Go for warm or hot water. High temperatures kill bacteria, while warm water is ideal for maintaining color and fabric integrity.

Don’t Skimp on Detergent

Use the recommended amount of a good detergent, but avoid fabric softeners. They leave a residue that can make towels less absorbent.

Add Vinegar or Baking Soda (Optional)

For that extra freshness, toss in half a cup of vinegar or baking soda during the wash cycle. It helps remove odors and restore absorbency.

Double-Rinse (Optional, but Wise)

If you tend to overdo it on laundry detergent, a second rinse in the washing machine ensures your towels are soap-free and soft.

Dry Like a Pro to Prevent Musty Smells

The drying process can make or break your towels’ freshness. Keep mold and that mildew smell at bay with these tips:

Air-Drying Perks

  • Hang your clean towel flat or on a hook in a well-ventilated space.
  • Use a heated towel rack if you have one – fancy and functional!

Machine-Drying Tips

  • Toss towels into the dryer on a low or medium heat setting.
  • Add dryer balls or dryer sheets to keep them fluffy and speed up drying. Pro tip: clean the lint trap after every load to avoid fire hazards.

Whether you air-dry them or use a dryer, make sure towels are completely dry before folding and storing. Half-dried towels are basically mildew magnets.

Signs You Might Need to Wash Towels More Often

Noticing some telltale signs that your towel hygiene isn’t quite up to par? Here’s when it’s time to cough up the extra effort:

They Smell Off

Got that damp, musty smell? That’s bacteria and mildew hanging out. A trip through the washer is needed.

They Feel Slimey or Stiff

A slimy towel is NOT your friend. And if your soft luxury towel feels more like sandpaper, it’s probably overdue for a wash (and fabric softener might’ve contributed to that stiffness).

They Leave a Soapy Residue on Your Skin

If your towel is leaving lint or strange streaks on your skin after you dry off, it’s time for a good, thorough clean.

It’s Been a While

Can’t remember the last time you washed your towel? It’s definitely time.

Keep Your Towels Happy (and Hygienic)

Towel hygiene doesn’t just keep you clean, it keeps your skin healthy, prevents illness, and lets you enjoy that spa-like freshness every time you step out of the shower. Remember these golden rules:

  • Wash towels every 3–4 uses (or sooner if signs like smells or slime appear).
  • Adjust based on humidity, family size, and use habits.
  • Follow proper washing and drying techniques to keep them looking and feeling their best.
